The Cathedral of the Holy Cross is the largest church of any faith in New England and an important spiritual home to 144 communities of Archdiocese. After 150 years, it received a major upgrade of repairs and renovations. The $26 million renovation project spanned 2 years encompassing extensive interior and exterior work. The renovation sought to restore this awe-inspiring edifice with absolute respect for the integrity of the Church’s artistic masterpieces. AYRE Lighting Group worked collaboratively with Elkus Manfredi Architects, McDonald Electric, Suffolk Construction, Illuminate and Granite City to carefully design a refurbishment and LED conversion plan for 19 historic pendants lining the interior. Two entirely new fixtures were created for the alter. All fixtures contained computer controlled dimming circuitry with custom striped color-coded wire matching the control systems specific coding. AYRE was happy to play a role in the implementation of a modern infrastructure in this historic building.

AYRE was on site amid the endless scaffolding, which felt like a small city, to assist in the careful removal, disassembly, wrapping and moving of the 19 fixtures to the AYRE factory.
From there, AYRE went to work cleaning and restoring the fixtures. With great care, the fixtures were gutted and rebuilt, bringing them up to current electrical standards. The fixtures were restored and repaired, while new components were fabricated to replace the few parts that were not salvageable. Careful consideration was taken to restore, but also keep the natural patina that has developed over time. A perfect pairing of new technology with the historic stature that makes the space so magnificent.

The existing lights illuminating the alter were not historical fixtures, so they were replaced with new ones. The fixtures needed to be recessed into the columns on the alter. The 15-light linear boxes were designed and fabricated with a tight tolerance to blend into the structure as much as possible. Articulating lamps allow for light coverage across the alter. A major improvement over the previous setup.
