St. Leonard's Church Restoration

AYRE had the pleasure of collaborating on a beautiful renovation of St. Leonard’s Church in Boston’s historic North End. Founded in 1873, St. Leonard’s Church is the first Roman Catholic Church in New England built by Italian immigrants and one of the oldest in the country.

A multi-million dollar fundraising effort was started in 2015 to address the extensive restoration needs of the church to keep it a safe and accessible home of reflection and prayer for this vibrant parish and community.

AYRE worked closely with Illuminate NE to provide a decorative lighting package consisting of both new and refurbished fixtures. AYRE refurbished the existing 50+ year old pendants in the main space, while converting additional pendants into flushmounts for the entry way.  Concurrently, AYRE designed and fabricated identical large format versions of those pendants for the center aisle of the church. These 5-foot diameter pendants complement the existing refurbished pendants while proving a much-needed boost in lumen output for the space.

Final installation of the new 5-foot center aisle pendants and refurbished 2-foot pendants. The new pendants were color matched to the existing refurbished fixtures.

All of the fixtures were wired with multiple circuits, allowing for connectivity to the new lighting control system. This provided direct and indirect lighting for the newly restored ceilings and walkways.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hundreds were present when St. Leonard’s Church reopened its doors on December 17 after a year-long renovation.  Cardinal Sean O’Malley joined the Franciscan Friars to reopen the iconic church and perform the consecration of the new altar. On hand were Fr. Antonio Nardoianni, Fr. Claude Scrima from St. Leonard’s and dozens of local clergy along with a standing room only crowd.
