An interesting article on the future of the incandescent light bulb.
Mr. Leslie touches on an important factor when choosing a light fixture and/or bulb which is something that we at AYRE Lighting have focused on when developing our bathroom wall sconces.
“Consumers generally bring habit, rather than intelligence, to their light-bulb purchases,” Mr. Leslie said. “It’s really problematic.”
Now, bulb buyers think primarily about the amount of light they need from a bulb, he explained, with the quality of the light and its suitability for the colors in a room as secondary considerations, if that. Still fewer people consider the different ways that bulbs distribute light. If you choose to wade into the waters of energy-efficient bulbs, however, these factors quickly come into play.

Incandescent efficiency standards in California
"Beginning January 1, 2011 light bulb manufacturers will be required to meet new efficiency standards in California to save consumers money and energy. The standard, passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush, becomes effective nationwide January 1, 2012. California has enacted the federal standards one year earlier to avoid the sale of 10.5 million inefficient 100-watt bulbs in 2011 which would cost consumers $35.6 million in unnecessarily higher electricity bills (Source: PG&E Case Study). By reducing energy consumption the standard will reduce air pollution from the burning of fossil fuels in power plants while producing the same quality of light as traditional incandescent bulbs." -http://www.energy.ca.gov/
